Michigan's Own receives rare Medal of Honor

A very rare medal now has a very prominent place at Michigan's Own Military & Space Museum. Stan Bozich, director and curator of the Museum, recently received a Civil War Medal of Honor that dates back nearly 150 years. The medal came courtesy of Frankenmuth High School teacher Diane Holmes, who acquired the medal of her great-great grandfather, Thomas Bourne. Bourne was a US Navy Chief Quartermaster during the Civil War.

Bourne was a seaman gun captain on the USS Varuna when he was cited for heroism "during an attack on Forts Jackson and St. Philip while under fire and ramming by the rebel ship Morgan on 24 April 1862."

In early May 2009, Holmes presented the medal to the Museum and signed a loan agreement with Michigan's Own. With the acquisition of Thomas Bourne's Medal of Honor, the Museum now has 28 original Medals of Honor on display. The Museum's Medal of Honor display is the largest such collection in the United States.
